Named in honour of Nokuthula Simelane, a stalwart whose courage and sacrifice remain a powerful symbol of resistance and justice in South Africa, the Centre is an honour to her legacy.
Furthermore, naming the Centre in this way strengthens its identity, rooting it firmly in an (South) African context and celebrates local women’s histories and contributions by creating a space for research, activism, and dialogue.
Values of dignity, freedom, social justice, and transformation, anchored in critical scholarship on decolonization and intersectional feminisms, history, memory, and human rights, collectively amplify silenced voices across different societal structures.
To become a leading African Centre for decolonial and transformative gender and intersectional scholarship and praxis, advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice and transformation in South Africa and beyond.
To promote interdisciplinary teaching and learning, research, and community engagement on gender and its intersections underpinned by decolonial and transformative approaches, while contributing to inclusive policy development, social justice and social change.
The aim is to establish a Nokuthula Simelane Centre for Gender and Intersectional Studies that advances interdisciplinary scholarship/knowledge, promotes equality, and inspires social transformation through teaching and learning, research, advocacy, and community engagement.
